Colorado Day 2-

It's very early this first Colorado morning. There is a guy outside the window above me, with a voice I recognize but cannot place, talking with obvious hopes that sleeping beauties behind garden apartment windows will hear the all important complaints he was making about there being "too many fags in this town" and about some "fuckin fat guy" who offended him last night. His voice reminds me of a girl I used to be, and his attitude reminds me of how happy I am to be in love with life and with the variety within and all around it.

As his voice gets farther away, I slip back into now, and I feel safe and warm and wrapped in sister-goodness. I hear another voice outside my bedroom door. Is it my healer-sister reading? It can't be. No one can read for that long without even a pause to see if your listener is listening. It could be a book on CD. Jenny's into those right now. I bet she is out there listening to something sagacious and soothing. It sounds like peace.

The reading stops. The comforting murmur of the wise woman's voice is gone. I am searching for the motivation to get out of this scrumtuously (I know this is not really a word) warm bed so I can hold my sisters in my eyes and enjoy these moments of sisterhood while I am so so so blessed with them. Ok. That did it.

_______________

Coffee and Breggos @ Amante

Jen: How do you pronounce it? Bray-go? I hope they're good.
Renee: If we don't like them, we can just slap each other with them.

This becomes our signature response with the possibility of not liking anything. Example: Should I buy this hat? Response: Sure, if you don't like it, you could just slap someone with it. And so on.

_______________

Pearl Street Shopping - There is a man singing Here Come the Sun with guitar and flute accompaniment.  We meander along a car-less road, trees and shade and delicious smells, sweet acustic songs from your childhood heart, art and its artists everywhere you look, and people who have slowed their pace to align naturally with this environment.

Later we lunch at Conners Irish Pub. Mostly we drink Bloody Mary's with a full lunch inside them. I don't really remember the food, but those drinks and the service was all goodness and joy.

Near the end of our time at Conners, we asked our super-cute and charming young waiter to tell us what brought him out to Boulder, and he said, "I came out here to see you!" And we three middle-aged goddesses smiled and got all bloated in our usually over critical heads. Later, after a very generous tip and some sobering up, it dawns on us that he actually said, "I came out here to C.U." He did take a fine shot of us, all happy, basking in imaginary flattery:

6/4 - Colorado Adventure With Sisters: The Day Before

The day before Colorado I spend packing and doing laundry and playing poker with Bob, running errands, taking a walk (I'm training for mountain climbing), dinner with Bob, and deciding what I want to take with me... during and through and all the while imagining what these beautiful, magical days will be like running around with my favorite members of The Adventurer's Club.

Let's back up 20 or so years to when Renee founded this very elitist club.  We were early teens and had to perform a great and adventurous feat, chosen by the club founder and president, in order to be initiated.  Jenny had to collect over 100 golf balls from a driving range we were cutting across when lost in Tennessee.  We convinced ourselves these balls were left and forgotten in this golf ball graveyard.  Deep down we knew better because the three of us were nervous as hell as we scurried around collecting them up to help Jen reach the designated 100.  She was successful in her challenge, as there were over 150 little white balls  stuffed in our pockets, purses, and homemade shirt pouches.  We gave them to Dad in hopes to make him proud.  He let us know we were indeed stealing, but he said they would make good practice balls for him to use.  Whew.  Grounding averted.

This is the three of us flying to New Mexico back in the
days of The Adventurer's Club
I was not a member yet at that time, but hoped very much to be one someday.  That same year, on a summer day free of hotel cleaning, Maxine Kenny and I threw cherry bombs off the tower on top of Mt. Baldy in Saugatuck.  We had to climb the 270 odd stairs to the top of Baldy, then squeeze through the hole in the fence, and climb the rickety and rusted staircase to the top of the tower.  We sat up there for what felt like hours smoking, talking, giggling, and boldly lighting four or five smoke bombs and letting each one  drop.  We thought we were some hard core bad asses then.  Apparently, so did Renee, and we were both sworn into the club that day.

So this Colorado trip, originally about me going alone to hang with Zack and Heather (which was enough joy in itself), turned into the beginning of an amazing tradition with Jen and Renee that each year takes me back to the spirit of those Adventurer's Club days.  When I wrote the entry above, I was bursting with renewed anticipation and excitement for any adventure that could and would unfold.  I can see how that may not have been adequately captured for you, my reader, which is why all this extra explanation.

Bob, on how to eat French Silk Pie 4/26/2008

Bob:  I wish I could pull it out and show you.

This is to Jenny in reference to what his French Silk pie looks like after he has "fused" the chocolate swirls to the crust that is left in his mouth after he has "sucked off" all the silk and whipped cream.  He explains his procedure with great passion and desire to educate the ignorant on proper pie eating for prolonged pleasure.  He takes all of this very serious.  His nut eating procedure takes a close second in entertainment value.

Bob "fusing."

This is then followed by a 10 minute argument about who gets to pay the bill.  Bob wins.

Most awesome thing that happened on this day:  I talked Jenny and Renee into going to Colorado with me!!!  Yippee!!

The upcoming trip to Colorado began our sister-trip tradition.  We have spent a week together every year in a new place since.  I recommend a tradition like this for everyone.  There will be plenty of entries about those trips comming soon to a blog near you.

Spring Break - March 24, 2008

Okay, I skipped several whiny entries about union stuff and my decision not to run for president again.  The entries are sort of sad.  I was upset over some back biting and the collapse of all the work I was doing to bring parents and teachers together. The last sentences in the entry before the one I am about to share reads:

I must take a break.  I am sick of my self.

I remember separating my and self with intention.  I was sick of my ego.  I was sick of living in my head.  I needed to find some joy, right meow (as Dana C. would say).  It seems like our school breaks always come right at the very brink of the maddness capacity a teacher's sanity will allow.  Anyway, the following was my plan for that necessary break from my self...

Theme for 2008 Spring Break:

Reconnecting with the little ones I love...yesterday was China Town with Maggie, the Fuzz, Emily, Logan, Sheryl, & Laura.

Before we went, I gave the little girls rolling book bags filled with Usborne craft books and all the supplies to make the crafts possible: paper, paints, tissue paper, sponges, foam, glitter, glue, ribbon, pipe cleaners, scissors, etc.  I had so much fun putting those packs together, and I am excited about crafting alongside those unburdened creative little beings. :-) I also want art created by them.  I gave Logan the two Diary of a Whimpy Kid books and an Amazon gift card.  He really liked that. Score.  I told Sheryl that Bob and I plan to get Em a laptop for her birthday/graduation gift.  And just like that, I was caught up with missed birthdays.

We ate at The Evergreen and the Chow Fun was some fun chow! Wow!

It was a beautiful day.

Today was Max and Kody's day.  We ate at Baker's Square and talked about feeling safe expressing ourselves.  Then we painted ceramics at Art 4 Soul.  Max picked a plate and painted a huge smiley face on it for his mom.  Kody picked a Budda and painted him pure blue.  I made a SPRING FARMS tile for Jen.  After, we played at Lan Oak park.  I was free.  No more self.  Just them and me.

65 Reasons to Love a Mom 12/16/2007

For my mom's 65th birthday, my sister Wendi came up with the idea to document 65 reasons why we love her and then share them with her somehow.  I collected ideas from sisters and nieces and nephews until we had plenty, writing them all in my journal.  Then we created a tiny book with one beautiful reason on each of its pages.  I added some very primitive artwork and we presented it to her.  I think she liked it.  Here are the 65 that made the cut...in no special order:
  1. for teaching me the art of tree decorating at Christmas
  2. for instilling in me a love for music and art and poetry
  3. for saving every silly card I ever wrote you and every corny school project I ever brought home

  18. for being a traveler and taking us with whenever you could
  19. for bringing us something cooler than a crappy t-shirt when you couldn't take us with
  20. for donuts...even if we didn't go to church
  21. for teaching me to shuffle cards
  22. for instilling in me a love for words and language
